1. The Python library — great locally, fragile in production

Chunking: what actually changes retrieval quality

Caption tracks arrive as hundreds of 2–5 second fragments. Feeding those into an embedding model directly produces useless retrieval — each fragment is too short to carry meaning.

Merge first, then chunk. Concatenate fragments into continuous text, then split at roughly 500–1,000 tokens with 10–15% overlap, breaking on sentence boundaries rather than token counts. Spoken language rambles, so semantic chunking (splitting where the topic shifts) noticeably outperforms fixed-size splitting on transcripts specifically.
